Rooted:  Fieldworks From The Meadow 

Drawing upon the studio meadow as my subject, “Rooted”, explores the native plants and wildflowers through their life cycles of seasons and time. The cameraless technique utilized is a photogram process. A fundamental method often employed in the beginnings of photography as a means of recording the world.  In this particular manner, the artist is the director and sunlight is the illustrator.

The resulting mixed media collages are a play of opposites:  light and shadow, presence and absence, black and white.  Movement and stillness are the result of the wildflowers’ transformation over time through exposer to sunlight.  The textbook illustrations reference the mechanical in opposition to the organic.  “Rooted” is an interpretation of nature from a three-dimensional form into two within a context that is both familiar and mysterious.
